The Society of Mills and Millers of Ireland was launched in 2001 to encourage and assist in the preservation and appreciation of mills as part of our industrial, architectural and landscape heritage. There are hundreds of mills and mill sites spread across the country and while many are beautifully refurbished or put to good use, there are also many others which could be restored or renovated while preserving their traditional context. The society aims to promote interest and awareness in this aspect of Ireland’s industrial heritage by building up knowledge and expertise in areas such as law, architecture, renewable energy and manufacturing and making information available through publications, lectures and events.

The Mills and Millers of Ireland Summer Event 2016 will take place on June 25th and this year the society will visit the Mills of Enniscorthy and environs.

Meet from 10.30am Holywell House, Enniscorthy, County Wexford

Directions: take New Ross road from Enniscorthy. Within 60km zone, pass former Davis Mill on left & take next left. The entrance to Holywell House is an immediate sharp left  turn.

Bessmount Watermill & Bio-energy centre

11.00am         Registration, Coffee/Tea

11:30am         Visit to Ballyminane Mill, home of Uncle Aidan’s Stoneground flour

12.30am         Bessmount Watermill & Bio-energy centre and presentation by

                       Dr Michael Snoek:  A photographic history of Mills on the River Urrin

1.30-2.30pm  Lunch at Holywell House

3pm                Visit to Kilcarbery Mill

What a week of celebrations it has been here at Eco Evolution!

The week began with a trip to Salerno to celebrate our Silver wedding anniversary. Hard to believe its been 25 years since we tied the knot!  The weather, scenery, locally grown and sourced foods and wines were just amazing. Definitely a return trip on the cards in the not too distant future 🙂 On Thursday night while we were enjoying our last night in Salerno I received a message telling me that I had won an award at the Blog Awards Ireland.

This year was my fourth to be in the final of the Blog Awards Ireland. With a quick check on Twitter I soon discovered I had in fact won a Silver award for the Best Blog Post category. It is an honour and a privilege to receive this award given that according to the Blog Awards Ireland statistics there was 4,000 nominations, 1,400 entries and 80,000 public votes for all the blogs!

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to those that nominated my blog for the awards and to those that voted for me in the public vote. A special shout out to all nominees, finalists and award winners. Keep writing about the things you are passionate about and I hope to see you all next year 🙂

The Public Sector Excellence in Business Award

On Friday we were presented with the Public Sector Excellence in Business Award for our contribution to the renewable energy sector in Ireland. Eco Evolution are hydro design specialists and offer advice and consultancy services to the public sector. The public sector is an important sector for us as it is through public projects that showcase these renewable technologies that public awareness and interest is created and increased. By supporting and implementing smaller scale renewable energy projects around the country the Public Sector can also help to educate the public more about these technologies and therefore possibly develop public acceptance and alleviate public concern about larger developments. The Public Sector needs to lead by example so it is important that they are seen to embrace these renewable technologies to help combat the effects of climate change and to help meet our 2020 targets.

Our company blog has been shortlisted in The Blog Awards Ireland 2015 in two categories – Best Lifestyle Blog and Best Blog Post. We’re delighted to make it to the Company Shortlist. It is great to see our company listed along with some incredible Irish companies. The Blog Awards Ireland recognise the passion and enthusiasm that blogging and bloggers share with their readers. This year the Blog Awards Ireland have introduced a public vote that accounts for 30% of the overall vote.

Old Mill Coffee Shop, Upperlands

The Old Mill Coffee Shop is based in the heart of the Historic Linen Village of Upperlands and opened in March 2013 it is a restored beetling mill bursting with character. The beetling mill is situated beside the coffee shop, this is said to be the only commercial beetling mill in the world!

This year’s Summer event is a one day event taking place on the 04th July in the lovely countryside of County Derry. It’s going to be a very active day with visits to several local mills, a tour of the Beetling Mill in Upperlands and a talk by Mr. Douglas Lamont followed by a visit to the Clark family. After lunch the group will visit Barney and Michael Lagan, Upperlands. Take a look at the timetable to see the list of interesting events that have been organised.

This year’s Spring event is a one day event taking place on the 18th April in the lovely countryside of County Waterford. It’s going to be a very active day with visits to several local mills, Ballindud Mill, Jim Butler’s Mill, Tom Butler’s Gorteens Mill, Strangsmills and a talk by historian John Walsh on local East Waterford Mills. . Take a look at the timetable to see the list of interesting events that have been organised.
