Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled. The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours. On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish and as much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be used to make compost. Get composting and recycling!
Without attic insulation your home looses up to 25% heat loss through the roof and without wall insulation it looses up to 35% heat loss through the un-insulated walls.
By insulating your attic you can save up to 20% on your home heating bill. If your attic insulation is currently less than 200 mm, then you should add further layers. There are a variety of suitable materials available on the market today including mineral wool, rock wool, sheeps wool, polystyrene, cellulose fibre and multi-layered foil.
The pay-back period for wall insulation is dependent on a number of factors including type, thickness and quality of existing insulation. Wall insulation can be increased in a number of ways and the most popular ways to insulate include (a) insulated dry lining, (b) blown mineral or cellulose fibre or polystyrene beads into the cavity, or (c) rigid external insulation with render or brick finish.
Insulating the 50 sq.m. (540 sq.ft) attic space of a typical house costs around €254 and could save approximately €76 a year (up to 20% of your fuel bill) so it would pay for itself in about 3 years.

Renewable energy resources are clean sources of energy. They can be harnessed without damaging the environment, unlike using fossil fuels which release carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and other harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. They will never become exhausted. Unlike finite fossil fuels, renewable energy resources are continuously replenished through the cycles of nature and will not run out.
Due to the global warming and the increase of both global power consumption and oil prices, generation of renewable and environmental energy is being promoted and subsidized worldwide. There are many forms of harvesting eco friendly and renewable sources, with hydropower being its most mature and largest source of renewable power. The power plants simply convert the energy from flowing water into electricity, in most cases using a dam/weir on a river to retain a large reservoir of water. This water is then released trough turbines in order to generate electricity. Hydropower plants produce no air emissions but in most cases affect the water quality, wildlife habitats and especially prevent the fish migration.
However the highly efficient Archimedean screw has been “re-invented” to generate electricity all year round at 24 hours per day, whilst obtaining the natural flow of the river, in combination with its natural fish friendliness and a small fish trap it is one of the few systems that is able to maintain or even improve the wildlife in and around the river.
A hydropower screw is a profitable source of income and entirely environmental friendly, once you possess the water rights of a flow. The hydropower screw can be used in places or areas where there is a low head ≤10 meters and a flow of ≤15m³/s
Examples of the types of sites suitable for the installation of an Archimedean Screw:
Rivers
In an existing spillway, lock or in a weir system
To replace existing waterwheels or other types of generators
Old Mill sites
(Waste) Water treatment inlets / outlets
Cooling water outlets of power stations
Industrial process water (i.e. Paper industries or steel mills)
Anywhere where water is available at a higher level
If you own any of the above site types and would like to find out more about how the Archimedean Screw Hydro Turbine can be of benefit to you please contact us here and we will endeavour to point you in the right direction.
We offer a friendly one-stop shop for hydro development, from feasibility studies to licensing, to installation and commissioning and everything in between!
Approximately 400,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard packaging is placed on the Irish market every year. Each family uses about six trees worth of paper every year and makes almost 20% of the weight of the average household bin. Remember, recycling one tonne of paper saves enough energy to power a computer for almost a year and also saves over eight cubic metres of landfill space.
