Directions: take New Ross road from Enniscorthy. Within 60km zone, pass former Davis Mill on left & take next left. The entrance to Holywell House is an immediate sharp left  turn.

12.30am         Bessmount Watermill & Bio-energy centre and presentation by

The week began with a trip to Salerno to celebrate our Silver wedding anniversary. Hard to believe its been 25 years since we tied the knot!  The weather, scenery, locally grown and sourced foods and wines were just amazing. Definitely a return trip on the cards in the not too distant future 🙂 On Thursday night while we were enjoying our last night in Salerno I received a message telling me that I had won an award at the Blog Awards Ireland.

This year was my fourth to be in the final of the Blog Awards Ireland. With a quick check on Twitter I soon discovered I had in fact won a Silver award for the Best Blog Post category. It is an honour and a privilege to receive this award given that according to the Blog Awards Ireland statistics there was 4,000 nominations, 1,400 entries and 80,000 public votes for all the blogs!

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to those that nominated my blog for the awards and to those that voted for me in the public vote. A special shout out to all nominees, finalists and award winners. Keep writing about the things you are passionate about and I hope to see you all next year 🙂

The Public Sector Excellence in Business Award

On Friday we were presented with the Public Sector Excellence in Business Award for our contribution to the renewable energy sector in Ireland. Eco Evolution are hydro design specialists and offer advice and consultancy services to the public sector. The public sector is an important sector for us as it is through public projects that showcase these renewable technologies that public awareness and interest is created and increased. By supporting and implementing smaller scale renewable energy projects around the country the Public Sector can also help to educate the public more about these technologies and therefore possibly develop public acceptance and alleviate public concern about larger developments. The Public Sector needs to lead by example so it is important that they are seen to embrace these renewable technologies to help combat the effects of climate change and to help meet our 2020 targets.

The Old Mill Coffee Shop is based in the heart of the Historic Linen Village of Upperlands and opened in March 2013 it is a restored beetling mill bursting with character. The beetling mill is situated beside the coffee shop, this is said to be the only commercial beetling mill in the world!

This year’s Summer event is a one day event taking place on the 04th July in the lovely countryside of County Derry. It’s going to be a very active day with visits to several local mills, a tour of the Beetling Mill in Upperlands and a talk by Mr. Douglas Lamont followed by a visit to the Clark family. After lunch the group will visit Barney and Michael Lagan, Upperlands. Take a look at the timetable to see the list of interesting events that have been organised.

Renewable energy technologies continue to offer significant potential to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of farm businesses through reducing and enabling additional income streams, when employed in the appropriate situation. This event seeks to assist farmers and growers with identifying which technology, if any, is appropriate for their own business (or domestic) situation. It also aims to provide information and contacts which will aid progress through the many procedures required to bring such projects to fruition.

There will be a series of seminars throughout the day highlighting local case studies of the main renewable energy technologies; wind power, heat from biomass, biomass production and utilisation, biogas production, solar PV, micro-hydro and energy storage. A second series of seminars will deal with many of issues facing those considering installing a green energy source. Topics covered will include the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), grid connection, planning, NI Renewable Obligation Certificates (NIROC’s), finance and budgeting payback.

The timing of the seminars is such that those attending can dip in and out of the seminars that interest them and spend time talking to some of the trade in the exhibition area or tour the renewable energy installations at Greenmount Campus to see some of the working technologies at first hand. There will be around 30 trade and ancillary stands providing both information on the various renewable energy technologies and guidance in overcoming any barriers to implementations.

I’d like to extend my congratulations to all the bloggers who made it to the finals and commiserations to those that weren’t selected. The Blog Awards Ireland  is a great way to get your blog noticed and gain readership and most importantly discover other bloggers that you might not otherwise have heard of and make connections with those that share similar interests.

Best of luck to the finalists in all thirty categories and to the judges who have tough decisions to make over the next two weeks. The finals will take place on the 04th October in the Westgrove Hotel, Clane where we will see a blogger from each category crowned the winner. It promises to be a great night kicking off at 6:30 with a drinks reception and plenty of opportunities for chatting to other bloggers and getting photos. The meal starts at 7:30, each course is followed by the announcement of ten awards, ending around 10:30 with the announcement of the winners of Best Blog, Best Blog Post and the Glenisk competition.

Hats off to Lorna, Amanda and all the team for organising such a wonderful event.

It is an honour to be listed in the company of  bloggers that I admire and whose blogs I read regularly.  This year sees a huge increase in blog nominations right across all categories and I’m delighted to see an increase especially in the Eco/Green category.  The awards are a great way to discover other bloggers from around Ireland that you might not otherwise have heard of and make connections with those that share similar interests.

For now we are in the Long List of nominations which we are delighted with. We will wait with baited breath to find out on the 22nd August  if we managed to get into the Short List.  The finalist judging will then take place and the winners of the coveted Blog Awards Ireland 2014 will be announced and presented with their well deserved awards in the Westgrove Hotel in Clane on 4th October.

It is also a day for discovery of the work that has already begun by pioneers around the world. In more than 75 countries around the world, wind farms are in operation, generating energy from a clean and renewable source.

Thousands of individuals are involved in the production of energy from the wind, but for many people, wind energy is a mystery. Global Wind Day is the day when you can visit wind farms, meet experts, attend events and find out everything you want to know about wind energy.

The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA ) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC ) coordinate the Global Wind Day through a network of partners. The day started as a European one in 2007 and went Global in 2009. On 15 June, thousands of public events are organised all over the world.

How it all began:

The Wind Day was first held in 2007, as the European Wind Day organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). The main idea was to connect a network of partners as well as using centralised communication tools, press releases and distribution of gadgets and coordinate of event organised by national wind energy associations and companies active in the wind energy field. The Wind Day in 2007 reached 18 countries, with a participation of around 35,000 people. By 2008, the event’s reach extended to 20 European countries and attracted 100,000 people.

In 2009, EWEA joined forces with the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and extended the reach from European associations and companies to coordinate Wind Day events across the globe. That year, the 300 events in 35 countries across the globe reached up to 1,000,000 people.

In 2010 and 2011 between 220 and 230 events took place in around 30 countries. Since 2009, Global Wind Day has reached more than 1,000,000 people plus the thousands of people engaging and supporting the event through online means such as social media.

Last year was a great success in Ireland  with over 1000 people visiting wind farms across the country. This year sees a number of wind farms across Ireland hosting an array of events to celebrate wind energy. The activity dates vary and some are hosting family days whilst others are inviting schools for fun, games and facts on wind.
